When a Linear gate component cracks, snaps, or tears out of its mounting, we weld or fabricate a replacement that fits the existing system, usually for $220 to $610 installed in Houston, and most weld repairs are completed the same day we arrive. The part that typically fails first on Linear operators is the gate bracket, the hinge plate, or the arm linkage, the steel pieces that take every open and close cycle, day after day. Owners usually find the problem two ways: the gate starts dragging or sagging on one end, or they hear a sharp pop followed by metal-on-metal grinding. We stock common bracket and hinge patterns on the truck, and for odd sizes we fabricate in our Houston shop from plate steel to match the original mounting holes.
One thing to be clear about at the start: Carver Gate Repair Houston is an independent gate service company. We are not affiliated with Linear, and we do not represent the Linear brand. What we do is match Linear equipment with parts that fit correctly, whether that means a factory bracket or a fabricated equivalent built to the same dimensions.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
Most of the weld and fabrication calls we respond to in Houston involve Linear’s swing gate operators, especially the LRA and LSO series, along with slide gate models like the SL and SLR lines. The failure point changes by model. On swing operators, the articulating arm or the mounting plate at the post is usually what gives. On slide gates, it is the rack mounting bracket or the gate frame itself where the rack bolts on. We also see a fair number of welded repair calls for Linear gate frames, particularly older ornamental steel gates that were originally fabricated with thin-wall tubing.
Identifying the right part is straightforward if you know where to look. The operator model number is on a label inside the control box cover, usually a letter and number combination like LSO or SLR. The arm or bracket itself will not have a part number stamped on it in most cases, which is exactly where owners run into trouble ordering online. They order by photo, the part arrives with the bolt pattern off by a quarter-inch, and the job stalls. That is why we match by measurement and bolt spacing when you call, not just by a catalog image.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question for Linear specifically: factory arms and brackets are fully cross-compatible within a series, meaning most LSO arms fit most LSO operators. Quality aftermarket pieces cut from the same gauge steel and drilled to the same center-to-center spacing work just as well, often for 30 to 40 percent less. We stock both and will tell you which one makes sense for your gate. For anything load-bearing, we recommend 11-gauge or heavier steel. Thinner material flexes and cracks in Houston’s summer heat cycles.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags or drags at the free end. This is almost always a hinge or bracket problem, not a motor problem. The welded plate has cracked, the hinge pin has ovaled out its hole, or the post mounting has worked loose. The operator keeps pushing, and the drag gets worse every week.
- You hear a pop, then a grinding or scraping sound. That pop is a weld letting go under load. The grinding after it is the broken piece riding against whatever is next to it. Shut the gate down or put the operator in manual release until it can be inspected; running it this way chews up the remaining good parts fast.
- The gate moves six inches, then stops or reverses. A cracked arm or bracket flexes just enough to trigger the obstruction sensor. The operator thinks it hit something. The fault resets, the cycle repeats, and the gate never fully opens or closes.
- Visible rust bleeding from a weld joint. Houston humidity and salt air near the ship channel accelerate rust exactly where the factory powder coating was burned off during welding. What starts as surface rust becomes a stress crack, especially on ornamental steel with sharp corners.
- The operator hums but the gate does not move, or moves only with help. The motor is fine. The mechanical path from operator to gate has failed: a broken arm pin, a sheared bracket bolt, or a cracked weld at the gate connection. The motor is trying to do its job and the steel will not cooperate.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a welded bracket or arm repair on a Linear gate runs $220 to $380 in most cases. Full fabrication of a custom piece, like a gate frame section or a reworked mounting plate, runs $380 to $610 depending on material thickness and how much of the old piece has to be cut out. If we are replacing the part entirely with a factory or aftermarket equivalent, the part itself is typically $45 to $180 on top of one to two hours of labor.
Every price we quote is written down before any work starts. The number you approve is the number you pay; if the rust is worse than it looked and the scope changes, we stop and get a new written approval. The labor and parts both carry a full-year written guarantee, and if the repair fails inside that year, the second visit is free. That is the standard on every job, including weld work.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things an owner can safely check before calling. First, look for the obvious: a visible crack, a bolt that has backed out of its hole, or a hinge that is no longer square to the gate frame. Second, if you know how, put the operator in manual release and push the gate by hand. If it drags or binds without the motor attached, the problem is mechanical, not electrical, and that confirms a weld or bracket issue.
What we recommend against is grinding out the old weld and laying in a new one yourself, unless you are a competent welder with the right machine. Gate brackets and hinge plates hold hundreds of pounds under constant load. A bad weld on a gate bracket does not just fail quietly; it can let the whole gate drop. That is a risk to anyone standing near it, and to the operator motor as it fights misaligned metal. This is the kind of work where doing it wrong costs more than doing it right to begin with. If it is a weld and it is load-bearing, call us at (361) 320-7104 and we’ll look at it.
FAQs
A properly welded bracket on a Linear gate typically lasts eight to twelve years in Houston’s climate, assuming 11-gauge or heavier material and a good weld. The original factory welds we replace are often the ones that failed, which tells you the weak point was there from day one. Houston heat does not fatigue steel by itself, but repeated thermal expansion in summer followed by humidity-driven rust at the weld seam shortens the practical life of unprotected welds.
Yes, if the crack is in the parent steel and the surrounding material is still sound. We grind out the crack, weld it full-penetration, then add a gusset plate. If the piece is rust-thinned or the crack runs through a bolt hole, replacement is usually cheaper than the labor it takes to make a repair hold. Lonnie Burke puts it this way: “If I can’t tell you exactly what’s wrong before I order a part, I shouldn’t be charging you for the part.”
Most bracket and arm weld repairs are finished in one to two hours on site, including grinding, welding, and paint or coating touch-up. A full custom fabrication, where we need to cut and shape a new plate or frame section, usually takes one to two days since the piece is built at our Houston shop. We will tell you up front which category your job falls into.
We stock common Linear swing arm assemblies, bracket patterns, and hinge plates on most trucks, along with steel stock for fabrication work. If a specific factory part is needed for an older Linear model, we can have it in hand quickly. We also carry parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, which helps on a lot of Houston properties where the gate is one brand and the operator is another.
We fabricate gate frame sections, rack mounts, hinge plates, and custom brackets for Linear-equipped gates in Houston. If the gate itself is broken, we can usually rebuild the failed section in our shop and weld it in place. Call (361) 320-7104 and tell us what you are looking at; we will price it in writing before anything gets cut.
