Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide

Linear keypad and intercom repair in Houston typically runs $145 to $340 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping a worn keypad membrane, replacing a failed intercom board, or rewiring a corroded terminal block. We stock Linear-compatible keypads and intercom components on our trucks, so most jobs are done in one visit. The usual discovery goes like this: the keypad works on Tuesday and refuses the code on Wednesday, or the intercom starts humming loud enough to hear from the driveway and the call button does nothing.

Lonnie Burke has been fixing Linear access systems across Houston for well over a decade, and the failure pattern here is consistent: heat, humidity, and age. Houston summers push these components past their rated temperature limits, and once the housing seal degrades, moisture gets inside and the board starts corroding. By the time an owner calls us, they’ve usually already tried a new code, fresh batteries, and a couple of firm presses. That’s when it’s time to look at the component itself.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear built keypads and intercom systems under a few different model families, and the compatibility gotcha is real: a Linear AE-1000 keypad is not a drop-in replacement for a Linear AK-11, even though they look similar from ten feet away. The mounting backplate, wire count, and output format differ. We match the part to the specific model already on the wall, which means checking the label on the inside of the housing or the back of the faceplate before anything gets ordered or installed.

For most Houston homes with a Linear gate operator, the keypad is wired directly to the operator’s control board using a two-wire or four-wire run. Older Linear systems from the mid-2000s often used the DK series or the AE series, while newer installations moved to the multi-button APeX and ECO series. Intercoms are typically the Linear LRA series or legacy models installed alongside the gate in the same enclosure. Aftermarket generic keypads exist and cost less, but the wire spacing and voltage tolerances on Linear boards are specific. We’ve replaced enough burnt terminals where a generic keypad sent the wrong voltage back through the board. When the customer approves, we use Linear-spec components, not whatever the supply house had on the shelf.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Is Failing

  • Buttons need hard, repeated presses before the gate responds. The carbon contact pads under the keypad membrane have worn down or the membrane has micro-cracks letting Houston humidity inside. It starts as a nuisance and turns into a full failure within a season.
  • The keypad works at night but not in direct afternoon sun. Heat expansion separates the internal ribbon connection or pushes the membrane off the contacts. Once it cools, it works again, which is why owners think the problem is intermittent when it’s actually a component failing on a schedule.
  • Intercom audio is scratchy, hums, or drops out after a few seconds. The speaker terminals or the board itself have corrosion. Houston’s salt air near the ship channel corridor accelerates this faster than inland neighborhoods like Meyerland or Bellaire.
  • Some buttons work, others never have, and the code enters one digit off. Individual contact pads have failed or the wiring harness to the board has a loose pin. This specific failure is rarely the operator’s fault; the keypad is the weak link.
  • The keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move, even though the remote works fine. The output relay on the keypad board has stopped closing. The gate motor is fine, the keypad is dead, and that’s a keypad replacement, not a motor repair.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Houston, expect $145 to $340 installed for a Linear keypad replacement, depending on the model and whether the existing wiring is reusable. A straightforward single-gang keypad swap on a gate with clean wiring sits at the lower end. A through-wall intercom replacement with a new enclosure and re-terminated wiring sits at the higher end. If the operator board was damaged because a failing keypad shorted the output, that’s a separate line item and we’ll show it to you before any work starts.

Every price we quote is written down and agreed to before work begins. That’s the Garrison Standard and it doesn’t bend. The number on the written quote is the number on the invoice. Parts and labor are both covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the keypad or intercom we installed fails within that year, we come back and fix it free. No charge, no argument, no second guessing the customer.

DIY or Call Us?

Keypads and intercoms are low-voltage components, which makes them safer to inspect than a gate spring or a high-tension cable. You can safely check the fuse on the operator board, confirm the wire connections at the keypad are tight, and verify the operator itself still runs from the remote. A multimeter test across the keypad output terminals will tell you whether the unit is sending a signal at all, and that’s a reasonable check for a homeowner who’s comfortable with basic wiring.

Where it goes wrong is when the diagnosis stops at “it’s probably the keypad” and a new unit gets bolted on without checking whether the existing wire run is shorted or the operator input terminal is damaged. We’ve seen a bad keypad take out a good operator, and a good keypad blamed for a bad operator. If you’d rather have a technician make the call and stand behind it, call (361) 320-7104. If we can’t tell you exactly what’s wrong before we order a part, we shouldn’t be charging you for the part. That’s how Lonnie runs the Houston shop, and it’s non-negotiable.
