Get your free estimateElite Access Control Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Elite-compatible access control parts across Houston, with most keypad, card reader, and receiver swaps running $340 to $890 installed depending on the model and wiring condition. Same-day service is available for most Elite access control failures because the parts are on our trucks, not ordered after we diagnose. The typical call starts the same way: a keypad works intermittently after rain, a card reader stops reading certain fobs, or the gate opens fine from the house but won’t respond from the street. By the time we get the call, the owner has usually already reset the breaker twice and replaced the keypad batteries, and the problem is inside the control board connection or the receiver itself.
Elite access control systems are built for commercial-grade duty cycles, which means the parts fail differently than residential-grade equipment. In Houston, the failure point is rarely the mechanical gate operator. It’s the access control wiring and the boards that sit in enclosures exposed to Gulf Coast humidity and heat. We see corrosion on terminal strips, compromised loop detector circuits, and fried relay contacts more often than we see a dead motor. Lonnie Burke, owner of Carver Gate Repair Houston, puts it plainly: “If I can’t tell you exactly what’s wrong before I order a part, I shouldn’t be charging you for the part.” That’s the standard we work to on every Elite access control job.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite access control installation covers the full range of Elite gate operators currently in service around Houston. The main lines we work on are the Elite SL slide gate operators (SL-3000 series and up), the Elite CS swing gate series (CSW200 and CSW200UL being the most common in residential and light commercial settings), and the Elite Mirage and Viking-compatible retrofit boards. If your operator has an Elite control board with a terminal strip for accessory inputs, this page applies to you.
One compatibility gotcha specific to Elite: the access control inputs on Elite boards use a dry contact closure, not a voltage output. That means the keypad or card reader you buy has to be a relay-output model, not a voltage-output model. We regularly get calls from Houston owners who bought a keypad online without checking that spec, and the board never sees the signal. The part number matters less than the contact type, so before you order anything, check whether the accessory outputs “NO/COM” (normally open/common) or a voltage signal. If it’s voltage, it won’t work with the Elite board’s inputs without a separate relay.
For OEM versus aftermarket: Elite’s own keypads and receivers are solid equipment, but they’re not the only option that works. Quality aftermarket brands like Linear and Doorking-compatible keypads will integrate with Elite boards as long as they’re relay-output. We carry both OEM Elite parts and proven aftermarket equivalents on our trucks, and we’ll tell you the price difference before you decide. The honest answer is that an aftermarket keypad can save you $80 to $150 with no functional difference, but if you’re matching an existing Elite pedestal mount, the OEM part usually fits the existing bolt pattern without drilling new holes.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad works sometimes, then stops after rain. This is the classic Houston humidity failure. The keypad’s internal seal breaks down, moisture gets into the circuit board, and the contacts become erratic. Reset works temporarily, but the problem returns with the next storm front.
- Gate opens from the loop detector but not from the keypad or fob. The gate operator is fine, but the access control receiver has stopped sending a closure signal to the board. This points to a dead receiver module or a corroded terminal connection where the access control wiring lands on the Elite board.
- Some fobs work, others don’t. Elite receivers store transmitter IDs in memory, and a weak onboard battery or corrupted memory slot will cause the receiver to drop specific IDs. It looks like a bad fob, but it’s usually the receiver losing its retention.
- Keypad reads the code, beeps, but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad’s relay is engaging, but the signal isn’t reaching the operator board. That’s a wiring continuity issue, often a broken conductor where the wire passes through the gate hinge or underground conduit.
- Gate cycles on its own or opens without a code. This is a phantom trigger, usually from a failing loop detector or an intermittent short in the access control wiring. It’s also a safety issue, because a gate that opens on its own defeats the purpose of access control entirely.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, Elite access control installation for a single keypad or card reader typically runs $340 to $890 installed. The breakdown that drives the range: keypad or reader hardware ($120 to $410 depending on OEM Elite versus aftermarket), a receiver if the existing one is dead ($90 to $220), and labor ($130 to $260 for a straightforward swap). If we’re pulling new wire through conduit or repairing a loop detector, the cost goes to the higher end of that range.
You get the written price before we turn a screwdriver. That’s not an estimate, it’s the number on the work order, and it does not change at the end of the job. The price includes the part, installation, programming to match your existing codes and fobs, and a written guarantee on the repair covering a full year. If the part fails inside that year, the second visit is free. No charge, no argument.
DIY or Call Us?
The access control side of an Elite operator is low-voltage, which makes it safer to work on than the motor or the high-tension gate hardware. But safe to touch doesn’t mean safe to modify. The most common DIY mistake we undo in Houston is a keypad swapped in with the wrong contact type, which either does nothing or sends constant voltage where the board expects a dry closure and damages the input circuit. That turns a $400 keypad replacement into an $800 board repair.
What you can safely check: keypad battery, visible corrosion on the terminal strip, and whether the keypad’s relay clicks when you enter a code. If the relay clicks and the gate doesn’t move, the problem is downstream of the keypad. That’s when we’d tell most owners to stop. Electrical troubleshooting on a commercial-grade board is where a wrong probe placement gets expensive. Call us at (361) 320-7104 and we’ll have a technician out who has already fixed this exact problem on this exact board hundreds of times.
FAQs
Figure five to seven years for a quality keypad in the Houston climate, less if it’s mounted in full western sun without a shade hood. The heat and moisture degrade the rubber keypad membrane and the internal seal, and once the seal goes, the board corrodes fast.
Sometimes. If the failure is a corroded terminal strip or a blown relay, we can replace that component on the board. If the board’s microprocessor or memory is damaged, replacement is the only reliable fix, and we’ll show you why before you spend the money. Call (361) 320-7104 for the honest read.
A standard keypad or receiver swap takes 45 to 90 minutes once the technician is on-site. Programming the new part to match existing codes and fobs adds time if the system has many users. We complete most single-part access control jobs in one visit.
Yes. Our Houston trucks carry OEM Elite keypads, receivers, and common board components, along with quality aftermarket options from Linear and Doorking-compatible lines. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems, so if your Elite panel shares a site with another brand, we can service both.
