We stock and install DoorKing-compatible access control systems and replacement parts across Houston, with most installations running between $850 and $2,400 depending on the hardware, wiring scope, and access points. Typical turnaround is one to three business days once we confirm the right components for your setup. Most owners call us after something stops working the way it should: a keypad that only responds to every third press, a card reader that quit reading cards, a door that buzzes open on its own, or a strike that no longer releases when the keypad accepts a code. The good news is that these failures are almost always traceable to a single component, not the whole system, which means you aren’t looking at a full rebuild every time something acts up.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing has built access control into a lot of different operator and entry systems over the years, and the parts are not all interchangeable. The most common setups we work on in Houston include the 1812 and 1830 series APC (access plus controller) boards, the 1814 and 1834 telephone entry systems, the MicroCLICK wireless transmitters, the 6004 and 6005 digital keypads, and the 1200 series card readers. Before ordering anything, we pull the board or the keypad and read the model and revision numbers directly off the label. DoorKing made running revisions to their boards over the years, and a board that looks identical to another one may have a different firmware revision that changes what keypads or readers it will talk to. That’s the kind of detail that separates a clean one-trip repair from a second trip with the right part. When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket: for DoorKing boards and keypads, we almost always go OEM. DoorKing’s weather sealing on their own enclosures and keypads is better than what most aftermarket suppliers offer, and in Houston’s humidity and rain, that matters. For simpler items like wiring, transformers, and strike plates, quality aftermarket parts are fine and we stock them on the truck. Carver Gate Repair Houston is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with DoorKing. We also keep parts on hand for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems.

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad works intermittently or not at all – This is usually corrosion on the ribbon cable connection between the keypad and the board, or worn silicone buttons that no longer make good contact. The fix is usually a new keypad or a cleaned and re-seated connection, not a new board.
- Card reader flashes but doesn’t release the lock – The reader is reading the card fine, but the signal isn’t making it from the board to the strike or maglock. Most of the time this is a bad relay on the APC board or a wire that has pulled loose in the enclosure.
- Gate opens on its own or stays locked when it should open – A shorted loop detector wire or a failing loop detector will trick the system into thinking a car is sitting on the loop, which either holds the gate open or triggers it to open randomly. We see this a lot in Meyerland and Bellaire where older loops have settled and cracked.
- Telephone entry system won’t dial out or calls don’t connect – In Houston, this is frequently a phone line issue or a surge-damaged modem chip on the 1814 or 1834 board. DoorKing boards are sensitive to voltage spikes, and a nearby lightning strike can take out the dialing circuit even if the rest of the board works.
- Buzzer or strike sounds weak or doesn’t release at all – Low voltage at the strike is the usual cause, either from a failing transformer or undersized wire on a long run. A 12-volt strike running on 9 volts will hum and fight you, and it will eventually burn out.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, a typical DoorKing access control component replacement runs between $350 and $1,200 for parts and labor, with full system installations starting around $850 for a single-door keypad and strike setup and running up to $2,400+ when you add card readers, a telephone entry system, or multiple access points. The range comes down to three things: what specific part failed, whether we’re pulling new wire or working with existing runs, and whether the enclosure and weather sealing are still doing their job. We give you a written price before any work starts, so the number on the quote is the number on the invoice. Every access control installation and repair we do carries our written guarantee, good for a full year. If the same part fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No argument, no invoice, no “that’s a different problem.”
DIY or Call Us?
Access control work sits on the line between low-voltage and line-voltage electrical. DoorKing systems run on low voltage, usually 16 to 24 volts, which is safe to work around, but the power supply feeding the transformer is 120 volts, and that’s not a place for a homeowner to be fishing with a screwdriver. Before you call, there are a couple of things you can check without touching wiring: confirm the breaker feeding the system hasn’t tripped, check that the keypad and enclosure are dry and that the gasket isn’t cracked, and make sure no wires are visibly pulled loose or chewed through. Beyond that, the troubleshooting gets into board-level diagnostics and relay testing, and that’s where a wrong guess gets expensive. A homeowner can spend $200 on a board they didn’t need and still have the same dead keypad. We diagnose the problem before we order any part. If I can’t tell you exactly what’s wrong before I order a part, I shouldn’t be charging you for the part. Call (361) 320-7104 and we’ll get a technician out to look at it.
FAQs
A properly installed DoorKing access control system in Houston typically lasts 8 to 12 years before major components like boards or keypads need replacement. The main thing that shortens that lifespan here is moisture intrusion into enclosures and surge damage from thunderstorms, which is why we always check enclosure gaskets and recommend a surge protector on the power feed. Call (361) 320-7104 for an inspection and we’ll tell you honestly what’s left in your system.
In some cases, yes: a bad relay on a DoorKing APC board can be replaced by a board-level technician, and we’ve done it before. But for most Houston homeowners, replacement is the better value, because a rebuilt board doesn’t carry the same weather resistance as a new one and the labor to rebuild often approaches the cost of a new board. Call (361) 320-7104 and we’ll give you a straight answer on your specific board.
Most single-part replacements, like a keypad or a card reader, take about one to two hours on site once the part is in hand. Board replacements and wiring repairs can run longer, especially on older Houston properties where the original wire has been spliced multiple times. We can typically schedule most access control work within one to three business days of your call.
Our trucks carry the most common DoorKing replacement parts, including keypads, loop detectors, transformers, and common board relays. Less common boards and telephone entry components are ordered from our supplier and usually arrive within one to three business days. Call (361) 320-7104 to confirm we have what your system needs on hand.
