Replacing or repairing a failed BFT keypad or intercom in Houston typically runs $240 to $520 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping the keypad module, the intercom board, or both, and which BFT series your system belongs to. We keep the most common BFT replacement parts on the truck, so most keypad and intercom repair jobs in Houston are finished in a single visit. What usually brings the call in: the keypad lights up but won’t accept the code, the intercom has gone dead or buzzes, or visitors can’t hear you through the speaker while the gate itself still opens fine from a remote.
The first failure point on BFT keypads, especially in Houston, is rarely the buttons themselves. It’s moisture intrusion at the ribbon connector or corrosion at the terminal strip behind the faceplate. Houston’s humidity and afternoon rain cycles work on those connections year-round, even through the rubber gasket, and the symptom is always the same: intermittent code rejection, or a keypad that works at 8 a.m. and quits by 3 p.m. The intercom side fails differently, usually a dead condenser mic or a speaker cone that’s baked out from sun exposure on a west-facing column. Either way, the repair is straightforward once the failure is identified, and we quote the price before we open the housing.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has used three main keypad and intercom families across their swing and slide gate operators over the years: the MITTO keypads (MITTO 2, MITTO 4), the RIGEL series, and the older T-Box intercom units paired with ARES and DEIMOS operators. The compatibility gotcha that matters most: a MITTO keypad wired for a BFT 24V board will not run correctly on a 12V ARIES or PHOBOS setup, and installing one without checking the control board voltage is the quickest way to fry the new part before the gate ever moves. Before we order or pull anything, we verify the operator model and the board voltage, then match the keypad or intercom to that circuit, not just to the brand name.
There’s also a real decision between OEM BFT parts and quality aftermarket equivalents. For keypads, we’ve had good results with aftermarket units that match the BFT wiring pinout, but the build quality varies, and the cheaper ones use thinner faceplate plastic that Houston’s UV exposure will yellow and crack within two years. For intercom boards, we almost always recommend OEM BFT or a direct-spec replacement, because aftermarket intercom boards tend to introduce feedback on the speaker line. If you’re not sure which BFT model you have, open the operator cover and look for the silver data plate. The model number and voltage will be stamped right on it, usually beginning with a letter code like “D” for swing operators or “A” for slide motors. Send us that number and we can tell you over the phone whether we have the matching part on the truck.

Signs Your BFT Keypad or Intercom Is Failing
- Keypad accepts the code sometimes but not every time. This is the classic Houston humidity signature. Moisture has reached the contacts behind the buttons or the ribbon cable, and the resistance changes with the temperature. It’s not user error, and changing the code won’t fix it.
- Keypad lights up but the gate never responds. The keypad is sending signal, but either the output relay on the keypad board has failed or a wire at the operator terminal has corroded off. We see this most often on installations where the keypad wire was not run through liquid-tight conduit.
- Intercom speaker crackles or cuts out during use. The voice signal path is degrading, usually a speaker cone or the shielded wire between the intercom and the board. If it fails only when the gate motor is running, that’s a ground loop, not the speaker.
- Visitors can hear you, but you can’t hear them. The microphone side of the intercom board is dead. On BFT units, heat cycles plus Houston’s warm nights accelerate electrolytic capacitor degradation, and the mic circuit is usually first to go.
- Buttons stick or require hard presses. The rubber membrane or the tactile switches underneath have worn out. BFT keypad membranes are replaceable separately on the MITTO line, which saves money compared to a full keypad swap.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, expect to pay between $240 and $320 for a standard BFT keypad replacement, including the part and labor. A BFT intercom board or handset replacement runs higher, typically $380 to $520 installed, because the board is more expensive and the wiring harness often needs re-termination. If both the keypad and intercom failed, which does happen after a hard lightning strike or a power surge, the combined job is usually under $600.
| Repair Type | Part Cost | Labor | Total Installed |
|---|---|---|---|
| BFT keypad replacement (MITTO/RIGEL) | $70-$150 | $170-$190 | $240-$340 |
| BFT intercom board/handset replacement | $180-$290 | $200-$230 | $380-$520 |
| Keypad + intercom combined | $250-$440 | $220-$260 | $470-$700 |
Every price is written down and agreed before any work starts. The price on the sheet is the price on the invoice, full stop. And every keypad or intercom repair we do in Houston carries our written one-year guarantee on the part and the labor. If it fails inside that year, the second visit is free, no argument, no revisiting the quote.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things worth checking yourself before you call. Confirm the operator has power, confirm the remote controls still open the gate, and try the keypad with dry hands and a clean button press. If the remote works and the keypad doesn’t, that tells us a lot. If the breaker feeding the operator is tripped, that’s a different conversation entirely.
What we don’t recommend is opening the keypad housing and testing wires if you’re not comfortable with a multimeter. The control side is generally low voltage, which is safer than line voltage, but a short across the wrong pair at the operator board can destroy a control board that was otherwise fine. The same goes for intercom wiring. A miswired intercom can leave the speaker line live and ruin the new board on first power-up. The parts are not where the expense lives. The expensive mistake is a bad diagnosis that costs a second visit and a second part. If the keypad’s already failed, one visit from a tech who works on BFT weekly is cheaper than two attempts at guessing. Call (361) 320-7104 and we’ll talk you through what you’re seeing before we ever schedule the truck.
FAQs
In Houston’s heat and humidity, a BFT keypad typically lasts 5 to 8 years before membrane or contact failure, and an intercom board usually goes 6 to 10 years before a component-level failure. Installations protected by a pillar shroud or shade structure last longer, and west-facing keypads in full afternoon sun fail earlier. Call (361) 320-7104 if you’re near that window and want a pre-failure inspection rather than an emergency call.
Yes, in specific cases. If the issue is a cracked membrane or a corroded terminal strip, we can often repair the existing keypad for less than a full replacement. If the board has failed or the buttons are beyond a membrane swap, replacement is the better spend. We’ll tell you which one applies before we ever order parts, and the price is written before we open the housing.
A standard BFT keypad replacement takes 45 minutes to an hour on site, including re-wiring and testing the code and the gate response. A full intercom board swap can take an hour and a half if the wiring harness needs re-termination. Most Houston repair calls are done in one visit, with the gate fully working before we roll out.
We stock the most common BFT MITTO and RIGEL keypads, MOSFET output boards, and intercom components on the truck, and we can order any BFT-specific part not on board, usually overnight. We also keep parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls on the same truck, so if the actual failure is elsewhere in the operator, the right part is already there. Carver Gate Repair Houston is an independent service provider and not affiliated with BFT, but the BFT parts we install are either OEM or direct-spec equivalents we’d put on our own gates.
