DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide

DoorKing keypad and intercom repair in Houston typically runs $185 to $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad face, the circuit board, or the entire entry station. We carry DoorKing-compatible keypads, intercom boards, and phone-entry components on our trucks, so most repairs happen in one visit. The way most Houston owners discover the problem: the keypad stops registering codes, the intercom audio turns to static, or the gate won’t release from the house phone even though the remote still works.

We’re not affiliated with DoorKing. We’re an independent gate repair company that works on DoorKing equipment daily, which means we can tell you honestly when a part needs replacement versus when it’s a wiring or power-supply issue that’s cheaper to fix. Lonnie Burke has been diagnosing DoorKing entry systems across Houston for over a decade, and the principle he applies to every keypad or intercom call is simple: if we can’t tell you exactly what’s wrong before we order a part, we shouldn’t be charging you for the part.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing has built entry keypads and intercom systems for a long time, and the model spread is wide. The most common units we service in Houston are the 1812 series keypads, the 1814 and 1816 telephone entry systems, the 1830 series with LED displays, and the older 1803 and 1504 series still running on gates across Meyerland, Memorial, and Cypress. Each series uses different keypad membranes, ribbon cables, and faceplate gaskets, so the model number matters. You’ll find it on a silver tag inside the enclosure or on the back of the keypad housing. If the tag is faded, a photo of the unit sent to us usually gets us to the right part before the truck rolls.

DoorKing keypads and intercoms also use proprietary connector spacing on the circuit boards. A generic aftermarket keypad from a supply house will not seat correctly on the DoorKing board without modifying the harness, and modified harnesses fail faster in Houston humidity. For the keypad face and membrane, we use DoorKing OEM parts most of the time because the aftermarket membranes crack within a year in direct sun. For intercom power supplies and enclosure boxes, a quality equivalent part works fine and saves money. The decision depends on which component failed.

Signs Your DoorKing Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Some buttons work, others don’t. This is almost always a worn keypad membrane. The carbon contacts under the keys wear thin, and Houston heat accelerates the breakdown. The fix is a new membrane, not a whole new unit.
  • The keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad is talking to the board, but the relay isn’t firing. This is usually a failed relay on the DoorKing control board or a worn limit switch, not a keypad problem at all.
  • Intercom audio buzzes or cuts out after a few seconds. Houston moisture gets into the microphone and speaker connections. Corrosion on the phone-entry terminals is the most common cause we see in homes near the bayous and along the ship channel corridor.
  • The gate won’t release when someone calls from the house phone. The phone-entry module inside the DoorKing unit loses its programming or its tone-decoding chip fails. If the keypad still works but phone entry doesn’t, the intercom board is the likely culprit.
  • Codes reset themselves or new codes won’t save. A failing memory chip or a degraded battery on the board will cause this. It’s a board-level repair, and it’s worth doing right the first time because a board that loses codes is about to lose everything else.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

On a DoorKing keypad or intercom repair in Houston, you’re looking at these installed ranges based on what we actually see in the field:

  • Keypad membrane replacement: $185 to $260 installed
  • Complete keypad assembly replacement: $240 to $340 installed
  • Intercom circuit board replacement: $290 to $420 installed
  • Full entry station replacement (keypad + intercom + enclosure): $650 to $1,200 installed

The spread depends on your DoorKing model and whether we’re matching an existing board or upgrading an obsolete unit. Every price we quote in Houston includes the part, the labor, the programming, and the test sequence to confirm the gate opens and closes through the keypad and intercom. You get the written price before any work starts, and it does not move at the door. The repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it fails inside a year, we come back free and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

DoorKing keypads and intercoms run on low-voltage DC power, so the shock risk is small. The practical risks are different: miswiring the keypad ribbon cable can short the control board, and a board short turns a $200 keypad replacement into a $400 board replacement. You can safely check a few things yourself: confirm the transformer is getting power, check for chewed wires at the base of the enclosure, and clean visible corrosion off the terminals. Beyond that, this is repair work that rewards a technician who has seen the failure pattern before.

Lonnie’s rule on DoorKing diagnostics has already saved Houston customers real money: if he can’t tell you exactly what’s wrong before ordering a part, he shouldn’t be charging you for the part. That’s what you get when you call us: a real diagnosis, a written number, and a repair that stays fixed. Call (361) 320-7104 and we’ll get it looked at.
